Levers
Levers are a machine that transmit energy from one place to another. A third class lever is the most common in the human body and is also commonly used in sport. the diagram to the below shows the build of a third class lever and what it is comprised of. In tennis the racquet acts as an extended lever from the arm and is a third class lever. The image to the right displays the lever used when playing the forehand where, the shoulder is the fulcrum, the elbow and forearm is the force and the ball is the load. My arm and racquet acts as the resistance arm when hitting the ball. the longer the resistance arm the greater the speed therefore, because I have long arms the racquet head accelerates at a greater velocity and moves through a greater range before making contact with the ball. The increase in velocity will allow the ball to be struck with greater power and will travel further however, if power is increased accuracy can decrease as I am not an autonomous performer.
